Message from Director
As an International Centre for Olympic and Para-sport Research and Education
Director of COPRE SAITO mayumi

In April 2025, University of Tsukuba established the Centre for Olympic Research and Education (CORE) to carry forward and further develop the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement cultivated through the Tokyo 2020 Games.
CORE’s predecessor was established in December 2010 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jigoro Kano. As the only Center in Japan recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as one of its Olympic Studies and Research Centres (OSRCs), the Platform developed educational materials in collaboration with the University of Tsukuba’s affiliated schools and implemented nationwide teacher training and practical support programs commissioned by the Japan Sports Agency in the lead-up to the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Building on these achievements, the new Centre will take a comprehensive approach encompassing adapted physical education and sport, sport integrity, anti-doping, and peacebuilding and international development through sport. It will also strengthen collaboration with related graduate education programs, including the Tsukuba International Academy for Sport Studies (TIAS), as well as partnerships with universities, research institutions, and international organizations in Japan and abroad. Through these efforts, CORE aims to become an international hub that comprehensively advances research and education concerning the future of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.
